Stay Cavity-Free With Our Preventative Dentistry Services
At HollowBrook Family Dentistry, we believe in helping our patients maintain gorgeous, healthy smiles through proactive, preventative measures that can prevent cavities, gum disease, and other dental or oral problems. With good dental hygiene and regular visits to our dentist office in Colorado Springs, you can enjoy a brighter, whiter, and healthier smile without any fear of tooth decay.
By teaching our patients how to properly brush and floss their teeth and by educating them on the best foods and drinks for healthy teeth and gums, we help them take care of their oral health between visits. The better care you take of your teeth on a daily basis, the healthier they’ll be.
Then, when you visit us for your regular cleanings and exams, we can spot potential problems before they become major issues, and we can remove plaque, calculus (tartar), and stains from your teeth, too. With fluoride treatments, we can also strengthen your enamel against tooth decay. If you have deep creases in your molars, we may recommend protective sealants, as well, to keep plaque out and keep your teeth strong and healthy.

Stay Cavity-Free With Our Preventative Dentistry Services
If you have mild to moderate damage or decay on one of your teeth, a filling may not be enough to restore it. However, the damage may not be extensive enough to require a full dental crown. In this case, depending on where the damage or decay is, we will most likely recommend an inlay or onlay.
If you have decay in between the cusps (the bumps that make up the chewing surfaces of your molars and pre-molars), we will most likely recommend an inlay, which will be custom made to fit into place and create more structure and strength for your tooth. For one or more damaged or decayed cusps, we will usually recommend an onlay, which is usually smaller and will replace the damaged portion of the tooth.
With digital dental impression technology and our own lab, we are able to make completely custom inlays and onlays on-site without the long wait that you’ll experience with other dentists in Colorado Springs. For more information on inlays and onlays or to make an appointment with Dr. Smith or Dr. Erlander, call our office today at 719-633-0049.
Erase Chips, Cracks, and Gaps with Dental Bonding
Minor flaws in your teeth can cause major confidence issues. With dental bonding (also known as bonded composite veneers), a resin-based composite is matched to the color of your teeth and molded over the affected tooth or teeth to create natural, attractive results.
What can dental bonding do for you? If you have gaps between your teeth, we can fill them in and give you a full, healthy looking smile. Bonding can also correct minor misalignments to straighten and even out your teeth without the need for braces. Cracks, chips, and discoloration can also be corrected with bonding, as well.
We can perform the entire bonding procedure in just a single visit to our Colorado Springs dental office. After applying the resin, Dr. Smith or Dr. Erlander will shape it to fit perfectly with the surrounding teeth and give you the smile you’ve been dreaming of.
For more information on bonding and other cosmetic procedures available at HollowBrook Family Dentistry, call our office today at 719-633-0049 or fill out our online contact form and one of our team members will respond presently.
Saving Decayed and Damaged Teeth with Root Canal Treatments
When you hear the phrase “root canal”, do you immediately cringe and cover your mouth? Root canal therapy has a bad reputation as being a painful procedure that no one wants to go through. However, with advancing endodontic technology and methods, that reputation is undeserved.
Root canal treatment (also called endodontic therapy) is performed when decay or damage to a tooth has progressed beyond the enamel to the soft pulp inside the tooth. When this occurs, the pulp will almost inevitably become infected and begin to decay, as well. If this continues, the root canals will become infected, causing an abscess or bone loss at the root, and the tooth will need to be extracted.
To prevent this, we will perform a root canal treatment, in which we will drill out the decayed pulp and replace it with an inert material or structural pins or posts to increase the strength of the tooth. A temporary filling is then put in place until we make and install a dental crown for the affected tooth.
At HollowBrook Family Dentistry, we have the experience and expertise to save decaying or damaged teeth in the most comfortable way possible. For more information on root canals or to make an appointment, call our Colorado Springs office at 719-633-0049 today.
Improve Your Overall Health with Regular Oral Exams
If you brush and floss your teeth regularly, drink lots of water, and avoid sugary and starchy foods when you snack between meals, you might wonder why you need to visit HollowBrook Family Dentistry for regular oral exams. After all, if you’re keeping your teeth and gums clean and healthy, what else do you need?
In addition to thoroughly cleaning your teeth and protecting them with fluoride treatments, during a regular cleaning appointment, Dr. Smith or Dr. Erlander will also perform a full oral exam. With the best radiographic instruments in the field of dentistry, as well as intra-oral cameras and digital cavity-finding lasers, we can detect tooth decay long before it becomes a problem.
With our superior equipment and years of experience, we can help you prevent most dental and oral health problems, but that’s not all. During these examinations, we also screen for oral cancer. While these screenings cannot prevent cancer, they can catch it early for fast treatment and the best results possible.

Keep Your Teeth Sparkling With Regular Cleanings
You probably already know that the foods and beverages you consume throughout the day leave a film of sticky plaque behind on your teeth. And you probably also know that this plaque can cause cavities and gum disease if you don’t brush and floss your teeth regularly. Did you know, though, that just brushing and flossing isn’t always enough to keep your teeth cavity-free and sparklingly white?
Even if you brush and floss regularly and thoroughly, it’s still easy to miss some spots, especially on your back teeth. If plaque is allowed to sit on your teeth for more than three to five days, it hardens and turns into calculus (tartar), which can’t be removed with brushing or flossing. The calculus on your teeth will then start to eat away at your enamel, causing cavities and irritating your gums.
Fortunately, with regular cleanings at HollowBrook Family Dentistry, we can scrape away any calculus on your teeth, advise you on the best brushing, flossing, and rinsing techniques and products, and help you keep your teeth sparkling and healthy. To schedule an appointment, call our office in Colorado Springs today at 719-633-0049.
Safe, Invisible Fillings for a Gorgeous Smile
For over a hundred years, dentists in the United States have used a silver and mercury-based amalgam to fill in cavities and arrest tooth decay. While these fillings are safe for the most part, they are dark silver in color, and depending on their placement they can be unsightly. At HollowBrook Family Dentistry, we offer amalgam-free fillings, made of a resin composite much like what we use for dental bonding.
This composite is completely safe to use orally. It comes with none of the risks of mercury poisoning that are inherent in amalgam fillings, and it can be made to perfectly match the color of your teeth, as well. If you have a cavity, even in one of your front teeth, we can fix it with a composite filling, and no one will ever be the wiser.
To learn more about amalgam-free fillings or to make an appointment with Dr. Smith or Dr. Erlander, call our office in Colorado Springs at 719-633-0049, or fill out our online contact form. One of our knowledgeable and friendly team members will be happy to help you.
Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment
Pain-Free Gum Disease Treatment for a Healthy Smile
Gum disease occurs when plaque is allowed to build up along and under the gum line. If it’s not removed within a few days, this plaque hardens and becomes calculus (tartar). You probably already know that plaque and calculus can eat away at the enamel of your teeth, causing cavities, but that’s not all that they do. They also irritate your gums and cause gum disease.
In its early phase, gum disease is called gingivitis and is marked by puffy, sensitive gums that bleed when you floss or brush your teeth. If left untreated, gingivitis will progress and become periodontitis. The gums will become more inflamed and will shrink and pucker away from the calculus and plaque on your teeth, causing pockets to open up where bacteria can breed.
Fortunately, we can provide non-surgical periodontal treatments like scaling and root planing. In these treatments, we use high-tech EMS periodontal devices to thoroughly clean under the gum line and along the roots of your teeth. With this treatment and proper dental hygiene, your gums should be able to heal properly.

Never Feel Anxious About Going to the Dentist
As understanding and friendly as Dr. Smith, Dr. Erlander, and all of our team members are, and as gentle as we make our procedures, you may still feel anxious about going to the dentist. You’re not alone.
Many people suffer from extreme anxiety related to visiting the dentist. They fear being judged. They can’t stand the sound of the drill. They are certain that the whole experience is going to be painful and extremely unpleasant. If that sounds familiar, we can recommend one of several sedation options to help you feel relaxed and calm throughout your visit.
Depending on your needs, your level of anxiety, or your preferences, you can choose oral sedation, nitrous oxide, or (beginning July 1, 2015) IV sedation. With oral or IV sedation, you will be conscious, but you will be completely relaxed and will likely not remember the procedure at all afterward. Nitrous sedation is more minimal than oral or IV sedation, but still serves to relax patients and help them feel comfortable and calm.
To make an appointment or to learn more about sedation dentistry, call our Colorado Springs office at 719-633-0049 today.
